When you value certain gems in your jewelry box, you need to authenticate them, or identify them for their worth. This is done through an appraisal and endorsing the quality of the stone. Today this service is offered in a lab.
Is That Diamond Fake?
When a diamond, for example, is fake, gemologists know what they are seeking. This can be very helpful to you if you want to have this type of stone certified and endorsed. Several white gems do cast a diamond-like look. For example, some diamond simulations may include stones that are represented as cubic zirconia, zircons, white sapphires, moissanites, white topaz, and quartz, or rock crystal. Glass can even take on a diamond-like appearance.
When you have this type of information, you can use it to further clarify any gem stone authentication in Thailand. You can also figure out the authenticity of a stone while you are shopping for diamonds. While a lab should be used for appraising the diamond and insuring it, you can also buy a diamond tester for individual use.
A diamond tester checks the thermal conductivity of a diamond or gemstone and only takes about 30 seconds to perform. Make sure that the gem is clean before you use the tester. A diamond tester only tests positive for the stones, moissanite, or a diamond. Synthetic moissanite has only recently been used in jewelry pieces in Thailand. Therefore, if your stone is from a period before 1990, it definitely is a diamond.
You can also check a gemstone for facet doubling. When you conduct this test, you will need a loupe so you can more closely examine the stone. A loupe is a small magnifier that helps you see the details of the stone. While a lab uses far more advanced equipment, using the magnifier will help educate you on how gemstones are made.
Fuzzy Facets Reveal a Phony Diamond
Look for fuzzy facets throughout the gemstone and see if there are several angles throughout the crown facets. You should have a jeweler educate you on what to seek when you are using a loupe. Diamonds are refractive, but imitation diamonds tend to be even more refractive. At certain angles, you can observe doubled back facets. This is seen through exceptionally refractive gems, such as zircon.
If the facets appear crisp—not fuzzy—you may be looking at a diamond, white spinel, glass, or cubic zirconia. Again, you will need to go to a lab to find out if you own a true diamond. However, this type of test can help you be a better connoisseur of fine gemstone jewelry.
When you get involved in diamond buying in Thailand, you certainly will need to find a company and lab that can authenticate all of your jewelry. This makes investing in the jewelry even more rewarding. You don’t want to wear any gemstone without appraising its value. By authenticating the jewelry, you will find that it will be more of a pleasure to own.
You also need to certify your gemstones for insurance purposes in Thailand. While it is nice to think that a piece of jewelry features diamonds, that may not be the case. You could insure gemstones that really do not hold the same value as diamonds. That is why you should always know where to go for gemstone testing.
